Born and raised in Ipanema, João Selva (born Jonathan da Silva), the son of a pastor, grew up in a community of former prisoners and converted artists. He picked up the guitar before the age of ten, guided by bossa nova muse Wanda Sá, and inspired by his father, a devoted music lover whose record collection brought together Black music, rock, and classical traditions. Radiant and full of life, the Brazilian artist João Selva sweeps listeners along with his new album Onda (Underdog Records, 2025). After Navegar (“to sail,” 2021) and Passarinho (“little bird,” 2023), Selva has continued to express his ideals through music: weaving together the sounds of a Black Atlantic that spans Brazilian samba, Angolan semba, Cape Verdean funaná, Caribbean zouk, Congolese rumba, and American funk. With Onda, he surfs this same current, offering a luminous, transatlantic body of work infused with sensuality and joie de vivre.
